History of Columns
Columns date back to as early as 2600BC which were made in Egypt. The first architectural columns were large in size and the design was carved to look like a bundle of reeds which in years later the cylinders were common or column as we know them today. The columns that were more elaborate and decorative were that found in Persia which mostly were made of massive stones. These columns found in Persia had beautiful carved capitals that were decorated with bulls and other animal figures. These different styles of columns included the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian were pioneered by the Greeks. The Romans expanded the styles to include the Tuscan and Composite. All these styles were a tapered fluted design with a decorative carved capital that included either a scrolled design or rows of acanthus leaves
