Custom Woodworking For California: Turned In Lancaster, Delivered To Your Site
A Craftsman bungalow in Pasadena needs a tapered porch column with the right shoulder and taper. A Queen Anne in Alameda needs a baluster that matches ninety others already on the staircase. A Napa ranch remodel needs six island legs in one species, cut to one dimension, with no variation between them. None of that comes off a shelf at a big box store.
That is the work TurnTech does. We are a wood turning shop in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Not a California fabricator and not a reseller. Your columns, legs, mouldings, and stair parts are turned on our lathes in Lancaster by the same craftsmen who have been doing it since 2002, then crated and shipped to your address in California. The lathes stay here. The finished parts come to you.
For California homeowners, contractors, and designers, that arrangement works out well. You get a shop that builds to submitted drawings every single day, rather than a local mill quoting a one-off it would rather not take on. Send us your specs to get started.
Wood Turnings Built For California Architecture
California housing stock is unusually varied, and each style asks for something different from its millwork. We build whichever one you are working in.
- Craftsman and bungalow: Tapered square porch posts, heavy pier caps, and simple stock profiles common to Pasadena, Berkeley, and the Bay Area’s early neighborhoods.
- Victorian and Queen Anne: Turned balusters, spindles, and ornate porch posts for San Francisco, Alameda, and Eureka restorations where matching the original is the whole job.
- Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival: Heavy timber-look posts, corbels, and spiral or barley twist detail suited to Santa Barbara and Southern California.
- Mid-century and modern: Clean tapered legs, minimal profiles, and unadorned newels for remodels in Palm Springs, Marin, and the Peninsula.
- Ranch and agricultural: Straightforward, durable posts and beams for Central Valley and wine country properties.
The products we turn:
- Columns & Porch Posts: Load-bearing and decorative, in smooth, fluted, or twisted profiles.
- Table & Island Legs: Turned, tapered, and square legs for dining tables, kitchen islands, and built-ins.
- Mouldings: Crown, base, chair rail, rope, and custom profiles milled to your pattern.
- Stairs: Box newels, balusters, and railing components matched to an existing staircase.
- Accessories: Floating shelves, spheres, finials, and specialty millwork.
- Cabinet Routing: CNC-routed doors, drawer fronts, and panels for cabinet shops running full kitchens.
How A Cross-Country Order Works
Ordering from a shop 2,700 miles away raises fair questions. Here is the whole process, start to finish.
1. Send What You Have
A CAD file, a dimensioned sketch on notebook paper, or a photo of the post you are replacing with a tape measure held against it. Any of the three is enough for us to quote. If you are matching an existing piece, photos from two angles plus your key measurements usually cover it.
2. We Confirm Before We Cut
You get a quote with dimensions, species, and profile spelled out. We flag anything that looks off, a diameter that will not work structurally, a profile that will not hold up in the species you picked, before a single piece goes on the lathe. Approving the details is on you, and nothing gets built until you do.
3. We Turn It In Lancaster, PA
Your parts are made in our Pennsylvania shop from solid hardwood, then sanded and prepped. Standard orders often ship within a week. Larger runs get a firm timeline upfront so your GC can schedule around it.
4. It Ships To Your Address
Small orders go out by parcel carrier. Columns, long stair runs, and oversized pieces move by freight, crated for the distance, and we arrange that for you. Transit to California typically runs several days on top of build time. We give you tracking and a delivery window so nobody is guessing on install day.
Everything arrives sanded and ready for paint, stain, or finish. There is no second step at a local shop.
Choosing A Species For California Conditions
California is not one climate, and the wood should reflect that. A covered porch in San Diego, an exposed deck rail in Fresno, and a coastal entry in Mendocino are three different scenarios.
We turn walnut, cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, cedar, pine, and poplar. For exterior work facing sun, salt air, or hard seasonal swings, cedar and mahogany hold up well and finish cleanly. For interior furniture and stair parts, walnut, cherry, oak, and maple give you the grain and hardness those pieces need. Poplar is the practical pick for anything getting painted.
If you are not sure what fits your exposure, tell us where the piece is going and what it has to survive. Our team will point you at the right stock rather than just filling the order as written.
Why California Contractors And Designers Work With Us
Matching is the whole job on historic work, and it is what we have built the shop around.
- We match what you send. Photo, sample, sketch, or CAD file: we reproduce it faithfully, including profiles nobody stocks anymore.
- Solid hardwood only. No composites, no veneer over MDF. Real stock all the way through.
- Consistency across a run. Twelve balusters come out as twelve identical balusters, which matters more than any single piece.
- You talk to the shop. The people answering the phone are in our shop in Lancaster, PA.. No call center, no ticket queue.
- Two decades of custom orders. Turning since 2002, with a 5-star track record on restoration and new-build work alike.
