Custom Woodworking For Virginia: Matched To Your Home, Made In Lancaster

Most Virginia woodworking calls start the same way. Something original is gone. A porch column on a Federal townhouse has rotted at the base. Three balusters are missing from a staircase where the other forty are fine. A chair rail profile runs through four rooms and stops where an addition went in. The replacement has to disappear into what is already there, or it is not worth installing.

That matching work is what TurnTech does. We are a wood turning shop in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We do not have a shop, a lathe, or a crew in Virginia. You send us the piece or the drawing, we turn it here in Lancaster, and it ships to your address in Virginia ready to install. Same craftsmen, same lathes, same shop we have run since 2002.

Homeowners, restoration contractors, and cabinet shops across the state work with us for exactly that reason: a shop that reproduces discontinued profiles as routine work rather than as a favor. Send us what you need matched.

Millwork For The Homes Virginia Actually Has

The state’s building stock spans three centuries, and each era has its own vocabulary. We build into whichever one you are working in.

  • Colonial and Federal: Slender turned balusters, delicate newels, and classical porch columns for Alexandria, Fredericksburg, and the Williamsburg corridor.
  • Greek Revival and antebellum: Full-height fluted and smooth columns with proper entasis, plus heavy base and crown profiles.
  • Victorian: Ornate spindles, brackets, and porch posts for Richmond’s Fan District, Church Hill, and Lynchburg’s older neighborhoods.
  • Farmhouse and vernacular: Plain square and tapered posts, simple rail components, and durable exterior stock for Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont properties.
  • Tidewater and coastal: Exterior turnings specified for humidity and salt exposure around Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Northern Neck.
  • New construction: Islands, stair packages, and trim runs for Northern Virginia and Richmond-area builds that want real millwork instead of stock.

What we turn:

  • Columns & Porch Posts: Load-bearing and decorative, in smooth, fluted, or twisted profiles.
  • Stairs: Box newels, balusters, and railing components matched to an existing run.
  • Mouldings: Crown, base, chair rail, rope, and discontinued profiles milled to your pattern.
  • Table & Island Legs: Turned, tapered, and square legs for tables, islands, and built-ins.
  • Accessories: Floating shelves, spheres, finials, and specialty millwork.
  • Cabinet Routing: CNC-routed doors, drawer fronts, and panels for shops running full kitchens.

Matching An Existing Piece: What To Send Us

Reproduction work lives or dies on the information we start with. You do not need drafting skills, you need to give us the right four things.

The Original, If You Can Spare It

A broken baluster or a removed section of moulding is the best reference there is. Ship it to us and we copy the profile directly, then send your original back with the finished parts. If it is the only one you have and it cannot leave the house, photos will do.

Photographs From Two Angles

One straight-on shot showing the full silhouette, one from the side. Lay a tape measure alongside the piece in at least one photo so we have scale. Daylight and a plain background help more than you would expect.

The Measurements That Matter

Overall length, the largest and smallest diameters, and the location of each transition point along the piece. For columns, note whether the load is structural. For stair parts, give us the existing spacing and rail height so the new work sits correctly with the old.

The Finish It Has To Live With

Tell us the species and the finish on the surrounding millwork. A new poplar baluster next to forty painted originals is invisible; the same baluster next to stained oak is not. This is the detail most people leave out, and it is the one that determines whether the repair reads as a repair.

We turn walnut, cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, cedar, pine, and poplar. Everything ships sanded and ready for paint or stain, so it goes straight from the crate to the wall.

Close Enough To Keep A Schedule

Lancaster County sits a few hours up I-83 and I-81 from most of Virginia. Northern Virginia is closer still. That proximity is a practical advantage, not a slogan.

  • Short transit. Parcel orders reach most Virginia addresses in a day or two after leaving the shop, so build time is the schedule, not shipping.
  • Simpler freight. Full-height columns and long stair runs move on regional freight lanes we use constantly. We crate them and coordinate the delivery.
  • Real dates. Standard orders often ship within a week. Larger runs get a firm window upfront so your GC can schedule the install.

Why Virginia Restoration Work Comes To Us

Matching is the whole job on historic work, and it is what we have built the shop around.

  • We reproduce what nobody stocks. Discontinued profiles, odd diameters, and one-off patterns are ordinary orders here.
  • Solid hardwood only. No composites, no veneer over MDF. Real stock through the whole piece.
  • Consistency across a run. Forty balusters come out as forty identical balusters, which is what makes a staircase look untouched.
  • You talk to the shop. The people on the phone are in our shop in Lancaster, PA. No call center.
  • Since 2002. Two decades of restoration and new-build work, with a 5-star track record behind it.

The photo gallery shows finished columns, stair parts, and reproduction mouldings alongside the originals they were matched to.
